Rare Kangaroo Cooked Underground – A Sherlock, Western Australia Adventure

Hook

Ever wondered what it’s like to taste kangaroo the Aboriginal way? In Sherlock, Western Australia, I joined the Best Ever Food Review Show crew for a unique underground cooking experience that will change how you think about Australian bush food.

Overview of Sherlock, Western Australia

Sherlock is a tiny rural outpost tucked in the heart of Western Australia’s vast landscapes. The video highlights one spot: a local‑favorite hunting ground where Indigenous hunters and the vlogger gather to hunt kangaroo and other native game. From digging earth ovens to savoring freshly cooked meat, this 24‑minute episode showcases the traditions that have survived for thousands of years.

Best Earth Oven Techniques in Sherlock

• Dig a hole deep enough to hold the animal and coals.
• Spread hot cinders at the bottom, place the kangaroo on top, then cover with dirt.
• Add another layer of hot coals on the surface.
• Let the earth do its magic, cooking the meat slowly and evenly.

The aroma that rises—called “goana” locally—signals when the kangaroo is ready to eat.

Things to Do in Sherlock

• Hunt for kangaroo with experienced Indigenous hunters.
• Learn about Aboriginal cooking techniques, including the ancient earth oven method.
• Sample other native dishes, such as yellow‑spotted monitor lizard, cooked without herbs or seasonings.

These activities give you a hands‑on look at how bush foods are prepared and enjoyed today.

Where to Eat in Sherlock

Sherlock itself is more about hunting than dining. The vlogger’s “restaurant” is the outback kitchen:

• Freshly hunted kangaroo cooked underground.
• Local Indigenous guidance on flavor and preparation.

If you’re looking for a place to eat, head to the local community center where hunters often share their bounty.

Pro Tips from the Vlogger

1. Respect the land – always ask permission before hunting or cooking in Indigenous territories.
2. Use natural heat sources – the earth oven requires only cinders and dirt; no electricity needed.
3. Let the meat rest on a bed of water after removing it from the earth to keep juices intact.

Hidden Gems Worth Visiting

• The ground‑dwelling monitor lizard is often overlooked but offers a lean, flavorful bite when cooked with the same earth oven method.
• Local Indigenous guides, like Elijah, share stories and techniques that bring history alive in every dish.
